Co-produced by the Foreman Art Gallery of Bishop’s
University and the Galerie d’art du Centre culturel de
l’Université de Sherbrooke
This international exhibition, curated by renowned art
historian and Eastern Townshipper Marie-France Beaudoin
is the fruit of several years of research and is the largest
exhibition on the subject of art and medicine ever produced
in our region. The exhibition is organized according to three
research axes: the body as subject, the configuration of the
human psyche, and new technologies. In all cases, medical
references serve as metaphors that allow us to address
fundamental questions regarding life, death, suffering,
sickness, and the issues raised by the astounding discoveries
made in the medical sciences. Presented simultaneously at
three venues, the exhibition features work by artists from
Europe, the United States, Canada, Quebec and the Eastern
Townships whose work causes us to reflect on the
relationship between contemporary artistic practice and the
medical sciences. On view in the two university art galleries
in Sherbrooke will be sculptures photography, installation
works and video while the third venue, the campus of the
Faculté de médecine et des sciences de la santé de
l’Université de Sherbrooke at the Centre Hospitalier de
Sherbrooke in Fleurimont will present a site-specific
sculptural installation by German artist Viet Stratmann.
A special conference series will accompany the exhibition.
On October 25 at the Foyer Mont Bellevue, Centre cultuerl
at the Universite de Sherbrooke from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, a
roundtable on the subject of art and medicine will feature
comments and discussion by curator Marie-France
Beaudoin, art historians Jean-Emile Verdier and Thierry
Davila, and Dr. Jocelyne Faucher, (moderator). Closing
statements will be presented by the artist Genevieve
Cadieux, followed by a reception in the lobby.
This unprecedented event has received major funding from
the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts et des
lettres du Québec, the City of Sherbrooke, the Ministère de
la Culture et des Communications et de la Condition
féminine du Québec, the Foundation of Bishop’s University,
the Faculté de médecine et des sciences de la santé de
l’Université de Sherbrooke, the Société des médecines de
l’Université de Sherbrooke, Pacart, Canadian Art (media
sponsor), and numerous private donors. The Foreman Art
Gallery will co-produce with the Galerie d’art du Centre
culturel de l’Université de Sherbrooke, a bilingual catalogue
documenting this major international exhibition in 2009.
